Picky Singaporean Women
This is part of an article in Life in STI from a few days back. I had a chance to read it though I'm away from home, because my friend. Una shared it with me. I'm too busy with studies and projects these days, so this is to entertain those back in Singapore bumming at home or at internships during the holiday. So tell me what you think.. both girls and guys.

Recently, there's been a spate of articles, even a movie, reinforcing this perception that Singapore women are too picky. But what do the women think?
Surprisingly, a former RGS girl said that in her experience, this was true. When she and her friends got together, they discussed boys 'like baseball cards', that is, as a mere agglomeration of attributes: who's richer, who's got what degree from where, etc.
'So it's all true!' the boys moaned in unison.
But, I ventured, don't men rate women the same way? The criteria is different, that's all. There were murmurings of agreement among the boys.
One fellow admitted that he and his friends even had a hierarchy of girls' schools: Convent girls were the most havoc (consistent with their worldwide reputation. Pope Benedict, are you listening?), while lady-like SCGS girls were the nicest to date, but would transmogrify into high maintenance tai-tais upon marriage.
'But RGS girls,' he said, pointedly referring to Singapore's top school. 'They're damn weird. Have you heard them cheer at sports meets? They sound like men! And not girly men - cave men.'
There was a resounding 'Yah!', even from girls from other schools.
The RGS girls didn't deny it - but tried to explain that the adoption of a low growl was to conserve one's voice, enabling them to cheer longer.
However, a former RGS teacher later told me that the growl was an agreement reached between RGS and RI, so the Raffles family could 'cheer with one voice' - that voice apparently belonging to Vin Diesel's meaner brother.
'Maybe,' said another chap. 'But hearing that sure scares the boys from dating RGS girls.'
I was suddenly struck that this, in some perverse way, mirrored the problem discussed earlier: that Singapore men are both falling short of, and being intimidated by, Singapore women's expectations - expectations which Singapore men view as unreasonably high.
But really, these expectations arose because women nowadays are simply behaving and sounding more like men - literally, in the case of RGS. And it's really stupid to say, 'You're being unfair to me, because you're being like me.'
While I feel some sympathy, I'm getting increasingly annoyed by men pleading for women to be less picky - because it makes us sound whiny. What does it say about us men that we would want women to dumb down their expectations for us, or actively seek women with lower expectations? As my old RSM would say, 'You damn no pride!'
The fact is, asking women to be less picky is really an argument borne of men's laziness. If we really want them to desire us, then we have to do better, not ask them to want less. It's tough, yes, because the dice are stacked in many ways but it beats wimping out.
So, women, if your men start whining, follow RGS and give them a good old growl.
