Denmark Day 2 Part 2: Kronborg Castle and HC Andersen

The Kronborg Castle is also known as the Hamlet Castle because "William Shakespeare's story of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, takes place behind the walls of the castle at Elsinore. " We were in quite a rush, and quickly travelled from Hillerød to Helsingør(Elsinore in Danish) by the metro.

Along the way to the castle, we met this group of people playing this game. I don't know what its called, but I first came upon it in Sweden. Anyway, this group of people happen to be Stockholmers visiting Denmark for a few days. Helsingør is just across the water from Sweden, so Swedes come over frequently by ferry. Well, I think this game is usually popular among the older generations. You split into 2 groups. You then throw the metal balls from behind a certain line and the closer your ball stops besides the little red ball, the higher points you obtain. Dom asked the people for a go, and on the way back we learnt that he ended up helping one of the teams win the game. They then asked him to try again, but he didn't do as well the second time round.

The walk back to the train station.

A warehouse-looking place selling liquor. As mentioned, the Swedes visit Helsingør frequently since they are in such close proximity across the sea. Well, the main reason is that the Swedes come here to buy their supplies of liquor to escape the heavy liquor tax in Sweden.




Bicycles and more bicycles. The number of bicycles in Denmark is enormous. A lot more than the numbers in Sweden. I guess its a different culture. The single fare in Stockholm and Copenhagen are comparable. However, in Stockholm, we have the good fortune of having the option to purchase a 30 day pass, which saves us quite a bit of money. There's no such thing in Denmark, so I reckon its going to be heavy on the pocket to take the train to and fro school or work everyday.



Here, we walk to the HC Andersens Boulevard and to the HC Andersen's statue. Well, the name of HC Andersen is mentioned throughout Copenhagen. Even Andersen's ice-cream is from Denmark and my guess is that their brand name comes from this person as well. So who is HC Andersen?

Basically, any normal kid would have read or would know at least one story written by HC Andersen. He's the author of many famous fairy tales such as The Little Mermaid, Princess and the Pea, the Ugly Duckling and the Emperor's New Suit.

We took a walk around Copenhagen, enjoying the night scenary. CH suggested we go see the new Opera House.
